12 mari cluburi au oficializat lansarea Super Ligii, o competiţie privată care va face concurenţă actualei Ligi a Campionilor, o declaraţie de război căreia UEFA a promis că îi va da replică, excluzând echipele disidente şi pe jucătorii acestora. Cluburile fondatoare sunt: AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF și Tottenham Hotspur. Într-o perioadă de pandemie, în care cluburile sunt vitregite de banii primiți din bilete, e nevoie de maximizarea profitului din banii TV. Ca atare, cluburile mari, la inițiativa lui Florentino Perez și Andrea Agnelli au luat atitudine și au înființat Super Liga Europei, competiție la care s-au înscris deja 12 cluburi, anunță Eurosport. Echipele care termină pe locurile 4 și 5 vor concura într-un play-off cu dublă manșă, pentru ultimele două poziții rămase în sferturile de finală.
